Then take a trek with me back through the 2008 postseason, and let’s relive some of that magic, because we sure as hell aren’t going to find it with the team that takes the field in 2013.
Why, you ask?
Well, after that promising 3-game sweep of the New York Mets to pull themselves within two games of .500, the Phills have dropped four of their last six, sandwiching those six games with absolutely pathetic 14-2 losses to the Cleveland Indians and (Christ, help me not put my head through a goddamn wall) the Miami Marlins.
They were outscored 39-13 over that stretch, managed just 29 hits, and were shut out twice. It gets worse, I mean just downright disgusting, when you look at just the four losses: 13 hits and five runs, so just over three hits and one run per outing, compared to their giving up 36 runs—17 of which self-demoted ace Roy Halladay was responsible for.
And speaking of Doc’s struggles, he’s (finally) off to the disabled list for shoulder discomfort, which he’ll have examined while the team is out West this week. It’s up in the air as to who will replace the former (as in, not since 2010) 20-game winner, but anything should be an improvement over a struggling, aging, injured, declining workhorse who has started this year going 2-4 with a 8.65 ERA. And if you look at Halladay’s ESPN Hot Zone stats, they basically tell you that over the last couple of seasons his cutter’s effectiveness has been on the decline. Hitters are taking care of business against, Doc.
Sure it’s only May, and sure the Phills have 130 games to turn this ship around, but I just can’t see them overcoming the same offensive struggles that have stymied this team for the past two years, and now adding the fact that they’re reaching for their seventh starter just six weeks into the season… Things just don’t look so good for them Fightins.
If you’re looking for me, I’ll be somewhere quiet, watching this video on constant loop until training camp rolls around…
