It’s been slim pickings this week as far as posts on this site go, but that’s because I was busy attending the Online News Association’s 2013 annual meeting in Atlanta. While there I had the opportunity to attend some excellent sessions, meet some incredible people, and discover a plethora of awesome tools that I hope to implement into this site and others.
One of the most rewarding experiences, though, was getting to hear Nate Silver—the stats expert known for his FiveThirtyEight blog, who was recently hired by ESPN, bringing him back to his sports roots—talk about the roles that statistics and data play in the work of journalists. While I could take the time to analyze the whole thing for you, ONA was awesome enough to provide the audio of the speech on their site, so how about you have a listen for yourself.
I’m beyond excited to see what ESPN has in store for FiveThirtyEight, which should go live sometime in early 2014.
