The conversation is never ending–it’s been going on for the last several decades. But it seems that the pressure has been mounting on Daniel Snyder and the Washington football organization to change its name for the better part of the last year and a half.
My opinion is well documented, and now, so too are Roger Goodell’s and President Obama’s. And today the NFL announced that it would hold a meeting with the Oneida Indian Nation about the football team’s name.
The time’s they are (soon to be) a changin’.
Thankfully for Snyder and his ownership team, though, a lot of the work has already been done to help Washington begin the process of selecting a new logo. 99designs, a logo design website, launched a “competition” for artists to design the next Washington football logo.
Of the hundreds of entries submitted, three new names ruled the lot: Warriors, Renegades, and Griffins. The first two make sense—Warriors has alliteration thing happening there, and Renegades allows the team to keep its iconic R or some variation of it—while the third is a cheap play on the teams current quarterback/anointed savior and the mythological creature made of an eagles head and wings, a lions body, and serpents tail.
Below are several options that stuck to me as completely reasonable options for the team. It’s mainly a mix of Warriors and Renegades with one cool Griffin design if that’s really the way they wanted to go. Have a look and share your thoughts. And be sure to check out the hundreds of others that are up on the 99design site.
This one takes the cake for me, as far as The Renegades are concerned. It’s entirely different, but the R does it all for me. So different, but the looping portion of the letter that swirls into the shape of a football is clean yet sophisticated—yea, I just got that into the letter R.
Throw these names and logos out. What suggestions do you have for the team name (aside from the one at the center of the existing controversy)?
